Salt has an important role in animal feed. it maintains the mineral balance of the animals at the right level and keeps livestock healthy. Salt is an essential commodity, not only to humans but also for all livestock animals.
SALT ROLES IN LIVESTOCK DIET:
Salt is involved in the digestion (HCl in the stomach), absorption (Na) and transportation of nutrients from the intestines to the bloodstream. It stimulates animals appetite, prevents dehydration, contributes to the maintenance of blood volume and pressure and participates in the enzyme and endocrine regulation system.
SODIUM AND CHLORIDE CONTENT:
Using salt to supplement livestock and animal’s diets is essential to their health, as well as their production. The main role of salt is to balance the nutritional requirements for Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl), .
Sodium:
Sodium is necessary for the animals‘ blood, nervous system, muscles and other required fonctions. In addition to its significant presence in the soft tissues of the body and in the bones, sodium makes up about 93% of the essential mineral elements in the blood serum and is responsible of regulating blood PH. It plays main roles in nerve impulse transmission and the rhythmic maintenance of heart action. The ability of muscles to contract is dependent on proper sodium concentrations. Also, efficient absorption of amino acids and monosaccharides from the small intestine requires adequate sodium. Forage and feedstuff do not contain enough sodium to meet livestock needs. The most practical and cost-efficient way to maintain a balanced sodium intake in the diet ofanimals is to incorporate salt.
Chloride:
Chloride is the primary anion in blood, and represents about two thirds of its acidic ions. The chloride shift, movement of chloride in and out of the red blood cells, is essential in maintaining the acid-base balance of the blood. Chloride is also a necessary part of the hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach which is required to digest most foods
SALT DEFICIENCY:
A continuous low salt intake affects the health of animals through a loss of appetite and weight. Lactating animals are most susceptible because milk contains a considerable amount of sodium and chloride. A deficiency of sodium or chloride in the diet will ultimately decrease milk production.
