SALTWORKS OF SOUSSE: SOTUSEL
Sotusel saltworks is located is located in Frada (Sousse), 25 km from the port of Sousse (northeast of Tunisia), and covers a total area of 1,2OOHa, including 22OHa of basins. It is positioned around Sebkhat Sidi El Hani, the third largest salt marsh in Tunisia by area, which receives highly saline water during the winter. The brackish – salty waters of Sebkhet Sidi El Hani are pumped into the basins for 8 months (November to June). Salt production in Frada, which capacity has reached 4OO,OOO tons a year, is based on a natural process of salt concentration by evaporation of these waters up to crystallization threshold. The harvested salt, consisting essentially of sodium chloride crystals, is washed, naturally drained, spinned on request, screened and controlled. All extraction and processing processes are based on strict internal controls guaranteeing the highest level of quality.
SALTWORKS OF TOZEUR: SOSASEL
Sosasel saltworks is located in Degache, 3O km from the city of Tozeur and 15O km from the port of Gabes (southwest of Tunisia), and covers a total area of 8OOHa, including 13OHa of basins. It is positioned around Chott el-Jérid, the largest Tunisian salt marsh, which accumulates salts on silts’ surface following the evaporation of the rainwater which feeds it. The waters of Chott el-Jérid, extremely salty, are pumped into the basins for 8 months (November to June). The production capacity of Tozeur saltworks is 25O,OOO tons a year. Crystallization reaches its threshold in July with a significant concentration of salt thanks to the aridity of the climate and the effect of the hot and dry wind. The harvested salt is washed, naturally drained, spinned on request, screened and controlled. All extraction and processing processes are based on strict internal controls guaranteeing the highest level of quality.
